Spring is near and that is cause for celebration at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.  Morikami's largest annual event, Hatsume Fair, is celebrating it's 41st year this year.  The grounds at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens are transformed into a unique Japanese spring festival each year called Hatsume Fair.  From Japanese (hatsu) means very, extremely or combined with and (me) means bud, sprout, or shoot.  The Hatsume Fair at Morikami celebrates the first bud of spring by transforming the normally tranquil gardens into a unique Japanese spring festival.  This years event is Saturday, April 4th & Sunday, April 5th from 10 AM - 5 PM.  Gather up the whole family and spend a day or two at Hatsume Fair.  

Highlights of Hatsume Fair include:

  • Taiko (Japanese percussion instruments) drumming by Ronin Taiko (Saturday) and Fushu Daiko (Sunday)
  • Martial art demonstrations
  • Cosplay (a portmanteau of the words costume play) costume contest (Saturday) and Fashion Runway Contest (Sunday)
  • Garden Tours
  • Avenues of artisan booths featuring anime dealers and plant vendors at the festival marketplace
  • Japanese street fair food vendors
  • Sapporo Beer Garden 
  • Sake Station 
  • Children’s games, Japanese crafts & face painting

Advance admission is $8 for children ages 4-10 and $15 for ages 11 and up.  Gate admission is $10 for children ages 4-10 and $20 for ages 11 and up.  A weekend pass is $15 for children ages 4-10 and $25 for ages 11 and up.  The weekend pass is only available by advance purchase.  Children 3 and under are free.  Admission is free for Morikami members and tickets need not be reserved.  Weekend pass ticket packages can only be purchased online in advance of the event.  Tickets are non-refundable and Hatsume Fair and the event is rain or shine.  Don't miss Morikami's Event of the Year.
